The eight most left buttons did not work on this Behringer Polysynth. I was looking forward to dive into this one as I never played a Deepmind 12 before. When I heard the failure description I already had an idea, what the failure is. After opening the unit and removing the left circuit board it was obvious. The eight buttons were all connected to the input of a 74HC165 parallel in, serial out shift register. These chips are usually chained for more than eight buttons and if only eight buttons are dead, the chip is probably at the end of this chain. I replaced the HC165 and was really happy, that the problem was solved.

74HC165 reads the buttons in and feeds a row of bits to the output.

ARP Pro Soloist DGX

Several presets on this ARP Pro Soloist DGX stopped working. Additionally, the pitch would occasionally drift while playing. In this particular unit, all the ICs were perfectly fine. The problems stemmed from contact issues in the IC sockets. I replaced the sockets with precision sockets and reinstalled the ICs. Do you also own an ARP Pro Soloist DGX or an earlier Soloist model? I lovingly work on these instruments until they function perfectly again. Their sound is truly unique, and the aftertouch feature allows for particularly expressive playing.

Precision socket vs 70s standard sockets - a big difference!



Bei diesem ARP Pro Soloist DGX gingen mehrere Presets nicht mehr. Außerdem driftete die Tonhöhe beim Spiel immer mal weg. Bei diesem Exemplar waren alle ICs vollkommen in Ordnung. Die Fehler resultierten aus Kontaktproblemen bei IC Sockeln. Ich habe die Sockel gegen Präzisionssockel getauscht und die ICs wieder eingebaut. Besitzen Sie ebenfalls einen ARP Pro Soloist DGX oder ein früheres Soloist Modell? Ich arbeite mit Liebe an diesen Instrumenten, bis sie wieder funktionieren. Ihr Klangcharakter ist nämlich einzigartig und mit Hilfe des Aftertouchs lässt sich dieses Keyboard besonders ausdrucksstark spielen.

I removed all modules of this Formant synthesizer to figure out which module is causing a short at the + 15V supply. But the short was in the internal power supply. Unfortunately the supply was soldered to the bus system. Otherwise I had disconnected the power supply from the supply bus. Next time I maybe just cut the lines to see, whether the supply works then.
Most of the power supply failures I repaired so far were caused by an old Tantal capacitor. They often just create a short at a supply line.
